Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Opening Night

A long time ago (or so it now seems), in a cineworld not so far away, we watched the epic, and undeniably awesome, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

It was opening night, and the atmosphere in the theatre was electric (as was the local bar, Porters, beforehand).

The movie is, of course, the long awaited seventh instalment of the Star Wars franchise, and is set 30 years after the end of Jedi, with original movie favourites Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia reunited.

Whilst I don’t propose reviewing the movie here (to avoid spoilers, of course!), I can safely say that it lived up to the unprecedented hype of the past 12 months.  Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, Episode VII will not disappoint.

We must certainly applaud J.J. Abrahams for succeeding in laying the foundations for an entirely new generation of Star Wars enthusiasts.

A must this holiday season! Enjoy!

May the force be with you all.

Vault Dweller’s BIRTHDAY Survival Guide – Fallout 4 Thanksgiving Party 2015

Let’s be honest here: I am not a gamer.  But there is something about the Fallout universe that fascinates me.  There is something very “Wabi-Sabi” about the desolation of the Wasteland.  And so when Fallout 4’s release was announced at E3 in the Spring, I was admittedly quite excited about having an excuse to host another Fallout party.

What made even more exciting was that it was to be set in the East Coast city of Boston (a beautiful Fall foliage region), and that it’s release date was 11.10.15, a mere couple of weeks before the American Thanksgiving holiday.   My theme was set, and all I had to do was research the latest installment of the franchise and pick up subtleties whilst James sat working his way across the Commonwealth.

Set in the year 2287, Fallout 4 tracks the quest of The Sole Survivor of Vault 111. As fans of the franchise will already know, the Vault-Tec vaults are developed in anticipation of the Third World War, that, when it actually materializes, ends in the decimation of North America (and presumably the rest of the World) in 2077. 2287 is a post-apocalyptic retro-future, where the Commonwealth Institute of Technology looms over the New England region, and the Commonwealth Wasteland has become the playground for feral ghouls, super mutants and raider delinquents.

What follows is the Vault-Tec guide to surviving in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust.

STAT

After a widespread nuclear event, you may feel anxiety and wander ineptly. There is little time for gnawing fear; instead you must focus on quickly understanding he basics of Pip-Boy manipulation, interactions (both violent and passive), and learn how to hone your S.P.E.C.I.A.L abilities and Perks. Advice is also given about interacting with like-minded Companions the hostiles known to be present in the Commonwealth, as well as a brief primer on Crafting.”

The Pip-Boy: A Robco industries Technological Wonder

The Fallout 4 Pip-boy Edition came with a replica of the game’s handy and essential central computing device, which is compatible with your alternate reality iPhone or Samsung smart device.  It’s pretty amazing, actually, and well worth the additional price tag.  In the UK, the Pip-Boy Edition was a   Game exclusive, and available for both PS4 and XboxOne.

What makes you S.P.E.C.I.A.L?”

Fallout uses the S.P.E.C.I.A.L acronym to describe your character’s primary attributes.  These are Strength, Perception, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck.  You select your combination of attributes at the start of the game, but as you wander through the wasteland, you can develop these attributes so that you are better equipped to deal with what Bethesda throws at you.

Vault life has its perks!”

The game comes with a Perk Chart, and this works in conjunction with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system to improve and augment your survival skills.  Leveling up in the game gives you Perk Points, which you can spend in a number of different ways by reference to the Perk Chart.

There are so many weapons and tools out in the Wasteland for you to collect to make sure you and your settlers can be safe in the hostility of the Commonwealth.  Here, we have our very own Mr. Handy, Codsworth, all poised and ready with his Standard Model Baseball Bat, part of the Melee weapons range.  Fragmentation Grenades are also a simple, yet effective tool for any Survivor.

FOOD

Let’s face it, Thanksgiving (particularly when combined with a birthday) is all about the feast!  But the Survivor must make do with what he is able to scavenge in the Wasteland and what he can grow in his settlements.  Turkey’s seems scarce, but who can go wrong with a fabulous Yao Guai Roast dinner with the usual thanksgiving trimmings.DSC_5400DSC_5392DSC_5398DSC_5397DSC_5391DSC_5322DSC_5296

UTILITY ITEMS

Bobby PinsDSC_5472

Plenty of patience needed to avoid breaking your limited supply of bobby pins (Kirby grips). Collect for use with those troublesome safes and locked doors.

BottlecapsDSC_5329

Bottlecaps are the standard currency of the Commonwealth and you will need these to successfully trade with your companions.

LunchboxesDSC_5313

Lunchboxes will often yield bottlecap stashes, and can also be used for crafting Bottlecap Mines.

PERKS AND BONUSES

Bobbleheads are a Fallout favourite – There are 20 in total to collect.DSC_5497

JUNK                                                                                                                                                           092

One of Fallout 4’s new features is the ability for The Survivor to use all collected junk for crafting purposes.  Workshops and workbenches allow you to craft the sh*t out of everything you find, and the Wasteland is truly your oyster, with only your imagination capable of holding you back.

Also, don’t forget to salvage as much duct tape as you can get your hands on.  This is a crucial ingredient for making adhesive for your crafting endeavours.DSC_5360

DATA

While risking your life by emerging from your Vault may be an idea you’ve already ignored the dangers of, why not completely disregard Vault-Tec advice and jeopardize the lives of others, too? Should you agree to complete quests for them, it seems only prudent to offer advice on remaining alive during the multitude of tasks you may wish to complete.”

QUESTS

As many Fallout widows will understand, there is a multitude of quests in the game to distract your other halves for millennia.  Main quests, side quests and random encounters are all there to be explored and enjoyed.

THE NUCLEAR OPTION

And you couldn’t possibly have a Fallout party without the main guest, the Mushroom Cloud. It is, of course, the reason we are all here having to make ends meet in the Wasteland.DSC_5337DSC_5565DSC_5572DSC_5344

I must confess I cheated somewhat this time around, and used a wine glass to support the top cake. The middle “blast” was a donut shaped piece of polystyrene, the shape needing something far lighter than cake to stay intact. I managed to secure some thin fairy lights within the royal icing to give the entire cake a nuclear glow.   The little mint green car is a vintage micro-machine that my sister had lying around from the late 80s.

“The Vault-Tec Documentation Department has used the most likely projections as the basis for this guide.  As this information was gleamed through simulation, we cannot guarantee 100% accuracy.  It is possible that things aboveground will be worse. For this reason, we must remind and implore you that your only real safety lies in a comfortable and sensible life underground.”

 HAPPY WANDERING!

Fallout: A Party Quest

Please stand by, for next Tuesday (10th Nov) sees the release of Bethesda’s newest member of the Fallout franchise. Set in the Eastern city of Boston, with both pre and post war elements, the world can hardly contain itself! I thought it would be fun to repost the blog I wrote last year documenting our Fallout New Vegas party. This year, we are planning a Thanksgiving version, and i’ll be blogging about this at the end of November. I hope you all enjoy the game!!

Eve England's avatarGeek Chic HQ

Following the release of Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, we celebrated by hosting a Fallout themed party for James’ birthday.  Our trip to Vegas last May prompted us to re-enact the festivities for James’ birthday this year.   We decided, however, to broaden the scope of the party to include Fallout 3, inspired by the Vault 101 birthday party held at the start of the game.

History of the Fallout Universe

The twenty third century in the Fallout universe is set in an alternate reality that diverged from our own in the mid 1940s, prior to the start of the Cold War and the subsequent Space Race between the US and the USSR.

A global energy crisis in the twenty first century saw the Fallout superpowers scrambling for control of the planet’s dwindling fossil fuels, and with the collapse of the United Nations, these superpowers resorted to a devastating…

#RWC2015 Final Review – Back to Black

It was fright night at the rugby World Cup on Saturday as the defending champions took on the Wallabies at Twickenham on All Hallows’ Eve. image

There was always a real danger that the exhilaration we have all experienced over the past six weeks would end in an anticlimactic fashion, but the titanic clash did not disappoint, as the almighty All Blacks made history with their third top spot at the pinnacle of international rugby securing the first ever back-to-back world title.  wpid-2015-10-25-22.11.35.png.png

wpid-2015-10-25-22.16.44.png.pngAfter a predictably slow start, all hell broke loose just before the end of the first half as Milner-Skudder finished a technically brilliant play to touch down for New Zealand.  Australia fought fiercely against the All Blacks’ brilliance, but Perfect Ten and Man of the Match, Dan Carter, had the final word, as he masterfully engineered a drop goal to conclude the tournament on his own terms.

It was McCaw and Carter’s moment and their team’s exceptional win ratio continues to set the bar at a level that other nations can only dream of emulating.

#Bronze Final

Also, we mustn’t forget the Springboks who, after a shaky start, won the bronze medal having defeated the somewhat unruly Argentina on Friday evening at the Olympic Park.

Until next time…

RWC2015 has been a exposition of underdog upsets and full of twists and turns that continued to lure us all into its irresistible grasp.  It’s been undeniably epic, and the final was truly worthy.

wpid-img_20151004_182624.jpgThank you England 2015 – We are expecting great things for Japan 2019.

#RWC2015 Semi Final Round Up – Paint the town black and gold

What a weekend! Two excellent Semi Finals, sending Australia and New Zealand through to the tournament’s final next weekend at England rugby HQ, Twickenham.

#RSAvNZL

image

Semi Final one ended with current champions New Zealand afforded the chance of retaining the title for the first time in World Cup history.  The All Blacks were in control for most of the match and, even though the final score was marginal, managed to do just enough to snatch victory.  The Springbok’s defense, whist defiant,  just wasn’t enough to knock McCaw’s men off their pedestal.

image

But it would be another 24 hours until the finalists were to find out who they would face on all Hallows eve for a chance to lift the sport’s most wanted piece of silverware.

#ARGvAUS

image

The second Semi was another southern hemisphere clash, as the Wallabies took on the Pumas.

#VamosPumas failed to achieve the start they needed and the Wallabies secured two early tries.  Sanchez looked to narrow the gap, but the loss of captain creevy and Imhoff, and an unfortunate yellow card incident take their toll on the Argentinians.  It was Australia’s day, and Adam Ashley Cooper’s too, the winger scoring an impressive hattrick to boomerang the Wallabies into their first final since 2003.

image

Oh, and this happened too… Awesome sauce;)

image

The final countdown…

Next week’s clash will see these two giants go head to head for the first time in World Cup final history, and it is all set to be a highly competitive affair!

A new batch of gingerbread are poised and ready. Let’s get ready to crumble!!

RWC2015 – Semi Finals – Clash of the Titans!

It’s going to be a huge weekend at the RWC2015 as the Southern Hemisphere giants battle it out to secure a place in the final next week!

Tomorrow we have #ARGvAUS. It would be great if #VamosPumas could break the mould and get into its first World Cup final!

Great Scott!! It’s Back to the Future Day, and it didn’t take 1.21GW to get us here!

It’s been 26 years since we were all first introduced to the bright and wonderful future of 2015. In Back to the Future’s second instalment, Marty and Doc jettison off in a flying DeLorean from the year 1985 to deal with a crisis involving Marty and Jennifer’s problem child 30 years in the future.  And the day they choose to return to just happens to be October 21st 2015 (i.e. TODAY!), a day many of us have been anticipating since the movie was released way back in 1989.

There have been many articles this week about the predictions made in BTTF2 about modern day 2015, and so I am not going to repeat what has already so eloquently been comment on by others. Instead, here are 8.8 ways you can mark this audacious historic occasion (ironically, my iPhoto is playing up, and so I have provisionally uploaded some instagram pictures – better quality pics to follow later today!):

I.

Rehydrate a pizza for tea

wpid-img_20151021_061636.jpgUnless you’re an astronaut, you won’t be familiar with the need to rehydrate your food, but here is how you can turn a teeny tiny Pizza Hut morsel (actually a cookie decorated with white chocolate and icing pens) into a fully fledged full sized snack (a real pizza!).

WARNING: Do not consume unless fully rehydrated.

II.

Have a “heavy” evening watching BTTF2 (or all three if you are so inclined)

Many theatres are showing special screenings of the movies, but you can also enjoy high definition BluRay versions at home! 2015 also happens to be the thirtieth anniversary of the original instalment’s release, another significant cult classic milestone.

III.

Support the Chicago Cubs in their attempt to win the World Series.

The Cubs will face the Mets at Wrigley Field this evening, and this could be the year where the Cubs end their 100-year title drought. There is now even a Miami team, the Marlins, which did not exist in 1989. A win for the Cubs would certainly be a huge tick for the long list of BTTF futurology predictions!

IV.

Wear a life preserve or wear your pockets inside out

Life preserves are certainly an accessory we all wear today, but Marty’s son preferred the inside-out pocket look. We are still waiting for Nike to release their self tying laces, even though the company has already patented the design!

V.

Enjoy a Pepsi Perfect

The Pepsi Free of the 80’s has become Pepsi Perfect by 2015, and the drinks giant has created a limited edition for BTTF Day if you can get your hands on one.  A lesser alternative would be the futuristic looking TAB clear, available in many American food stores here in the UK.  The Future is Now!

VI.

Watch the Jaws 19 trailer

Thank goodness we do not have to endure the prospect of the Holomax Jaws19 rendition!

At the time, the Jaws franchise was taking the world by storm, and the nod to Max Speilberg was a humorous touch.  A parody has been created, however, if you are sad that Jaws 19 has been shunned into the realm of science fiction.

A reference to the continuing Star Wars saga would have been more appropriate:)

VI.

Attend a rhythmic ceremonial ritual at your local nightclub whilst trying to avoid bumping into your future self.

This is a tricky one, but I am sure there will be plenty of BTTF events taking place nationwide.

VII.

Play a retro arcade shoot ’em up game.

If you can find one…

VIII.VIII.

Just take a moment and be thankful that you don’t have a fax machine in every room of your house, although this doesn’t quite make up for the fact that we aren’t all whizzing around on Hoverboards:(

HAPPY

BACK TO THE FUTURE DAY

EVERYONE!!

#RWC2015 Quarter Final Round-up: Zut alors! Southern Hemisphere sides smash into the Semis!

After a balanced NorthvSouth set up for the Quarters, the Northern Hemisphere failed to get a foot in the Semis.  For the first time, the final four will be a play-off amongst the Rugby Championship teams. Japan remain the only Northern Hemisphere team to beat one of the tri – nations. Whist Wales and Scotland came agonisingly close, and in spite of the rise of the underdogs, RWC2015 confirms the superiority of those teams practising the chasing of the egg South of the equator.wpid-img_20151016_174832.jpg

#RSAvWAL

wpid-2015-10-16-18.07.08.png.pngWales have only beaten South Africa twice in their history, and so it was always going to be a tall order to “do a Japan” at Twickenham.  But Wales performed admirably against the Bokke, and it almost was Wales’ day, as a brilliant drop goal by kicking king, Dan Biggar himself gave Wales an unprecedented first half lead.  We came so close, as Warburton’s pack defended well against a powerful Springboks team, but du Preez dashed Wales’ hope for another shot at a RWC final with his spectacular 75th minute try.wpid-img_20151017_180649.jpg

They made a nation proud. #IAmWales #FiYwCymru

#NZLvFRA

wpid-img_20151016_175748.jpgIt was inevitable that comparisons were being made to THAT famous night in Cardiff back in 2007, when the fickle French dumped the All Blacks unceremoniously out of the tournament at the Quarter Final stage!wpid-img_20151017_182702.jpg

If anyone could knock out the All Blacks, it was the French, but tonight was not the night for French fancies. With the devastating loss of Magic Michalak early in the game (who also sadly confirmed at the end of the game that he will be retiring from international rugby), the French resistance could not make any ground against a punishing New Zealand side. The French had surrendered, and the final score was incredulous for a knock-out game.  Even Georgia, Namibia and Tonga suffered smaller deficits against the World Champions.wpid-img_20151017_220222.jpg

I felt for the French team, and their coach, as everyone else surely did, as this was a sad, and humiliating exit from the tournament.

#IREvARG

wpid-img_20151016_180122.jpgThe Millennium Stadium was a sea of green as the third quarter final kicked off between Ireland and Argentina. Many a wager had been put on the Irish securing a SF spot on behalf of the Northern Hemisphere, but the Pumas were up for it from the off, and not even a tireless comeback from the men in green after half time could stop Argentina’s compelling prowess.  Imhoff was immense and Sanchez a valiant talisman.wpid-img_20151018_122814.jpgwpid-img_20151018_123559.jpgwpid-img_20151018_150333.jpg

The Argentinians had been overlooked and underestimated, but their performance make them a noteworthy contender to reach only their second ever World Cup Semi Final!

#VamosPumas

#AUSvSCO

wpid-img_20151016_180329.jpgIncredible first half at Twickenham as Australia’s three tries to Scotland’s one still left the Wallabies trailing by one point at half time, as usually precise Foley missed all three of his early shots at goal.
Fortunately for the Australians, Foley’s first half fumbles didn’t cost them the game, but it almost did, as the Scots bravely responded to everything the Aussies threw at them in the second half.

They even called on the support of the highland-esq driving rain, which for a brief moment, saw the tides turn in favour of the Scottish, who with two minutes to play, were on the cusp of another historic RWC2015 upset.  But a controversial penalty awarded against them in the dying minutes gave Foley a chance at redemption, and his calm, collective composure ensured the Australians took the final Semi Final place.  wpid-img_20151018_174844.jpg

Wallace would have been proud, Scotland. We share your pain.

In spite of the make up of the final four, RWC2015 continues to be one of the most competitive tournaments to date. How great it would be to see a New Zealand vs Argentina final in Twickenham in two weeks time, making it the third time in a row that the final has seen two pool teams meet again for the chance to lift the Webb Ellis trophy.

Next Weekend – SEMI FINAL TIME!!!

RWC2015 – Quarter Final Preview – That’s the way the cookies crumble

Well, it certainly has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride so far!

Legends are born here.
Blood & sweat. Dreams made, broken.
Rugby is our game. #RWCHaikusDSC_4358

The pool stage of the RWC2015 has been sensational, and has been full of drama and controversy.  The 40 matches have been a delight to experience, with the Tier 2 performances promising to be the tournament’s greatest legacy.  Rewind back to week 1, where the rugby world axis was irrevocably reversed by the Brave Blossoms of Japan, as the mighty Springbox were left dismayed, confounded, and broken.   But it was more than just a fluke defeat, it was a statement: That to underestimate these emerging rugby nations was arrogant  folly, with Japan’s performance inspiring other nations such as Georgia and Namibia to reach beyond what was ever expected of them against the sport’s superpowers.  England 2015 is promising to be one of the most contested tournaments of all time, but Japan’s failure to reach the knock-out stage, despite their winning of three group matches, is a real disappointment.

We are, instead, left with eight “usual suspects” (although England is conspicuously absent), with New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales all progressing to the Quarter Finals this coming weekend.

Final pool standings

The only pool that has not ended up with the predicable top-two teams, is Pool A.  The affectionately named “Group of Death” saw doomed hosts, England, exiting the tournament early, with Australia and Wales each securing a Quarter Final opportunity. Pool B, after a shaky start, came to some form of equilibrium, as South Africa and Scotland progress, with Pool C seeing both New Zealand and Argentina progress comfortably.  Pool D was also fairly predicable, with only the final game between France and Ireland causing any real difficulty in the final placement of the teams.DSC_4935DSC_4939DSC_4954DSC_4956DSC_4950DSC_4948DSC_4961DSC_4967Many state that is critical that a Northern Hemisphere team lift the trophy on Halloween, but with the injuries, retirements and suspensions hitting these sides particularly hard, the prospect of Europe etching its way onto the Webb Ellis cup is increasingly unlikely.

But hey! This has been THE tournament for upsets, and may let that trend continue into the weekend. indeed, there must be some apprehension within the All Black camp, as they face (or at least hope to avoid) a genuine groundhog day moment on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium.  It was in 2007, you will recall, that the tournament favourites were dishonourably discharged from the competition at the hands of the French masters back in 2007.  It must, therefore, have come as a relief to find that Allez les bleus will on Saturday be Allez les rouge, and Nigel Owens is stepping into the shoes of Stuart Barnes!

Quarter Final Schedule

The weekend will be quiet as compared to the chaos of the past month’s scheduling, but the stakes are that much higher.  It is at the knock-out stages where a different sort of rugby is usually played, and this is where the pressure really does separate the great teams and those that are just super awesome teams!

Saturday – #RSAvWAL – 4pm Twickenham

Saturday – #NZLvFRA – 8pm Millennium Stadium

Sunday – #IREvARG – 1pm Millennium Stadium

Sunday – #AUSvSCO – 4pm Twickenham

For those of us not fortunate enough to have tickets to the games, tune in to ITV for another Whopping Weekend of rugby!
